Clydebank teenage girls engineer their futures on a council housing scheme, emerging like daisies do through cracks in the pavements.

Things are on the up: DORIS (17), a lovable rogue who views adulthood as an affliction, scores her first council flat; KAREN (17), sweet and hot-tempered, finds her ideal man - one who works, fucks and guards the home perimeter; high maintenance TRACE (18) is over the moon when her girlfriend, intense Nick (17), secures a job as a carer to escape her mum’s loser boyfriend and his drunken fists… but when scheme-life celebrations turn sour, this teenage daisy-chain’s happy ending is threatened.

Clydebank faces significant challenges, with over 30% of youth unemployed and deep-rooted inequalities. Austerity measures worsen social divisions, while the area reported the highest domestic violence rates in Scotland and one of the highest in Europe for 2021/2022. Drug deaths increased by 20% in 2023, and a housing emergency was declared due to the urgent need for social housing.

THE FILM

“I grew up in a town officially dubbed as the worst place in Scotland to be a woman. I wanted to challenge the stereotypical outsider’s imagined version of the scheme I live in with the aim to creatively celebrate the diverse people and parts of our vibrant community that are often stigmatised, rarely consulted with and hardly ever appreciated,” says Kirkwood.

Who is Sara Jane Kirkwood?

Sara Jane Kirkwood is a Clydebank-based award-winning director and writer and alumni of the Scottish NFTS. She is committed to stories of voices rarely heard and areas of life often unseen.Much of her writing is drawn from a rich tapestry of her unique life experiences: She was a registered non-traditional social worker manager for over 20 years who was awarded a degree from Robert Gordon University, the centre of excellence for children’s care and protection. Latterly she developed and managed Scotland’s first non-exclusion service for traumatised homeless youth who no-one could work with and mentored a development of a similar service in Wales. She also contributed to the Scottish Governments cross-working parties for sex workers and survivors of abuse and was an active participant in MAPPA.For Sara Jane, the most precious parts of that career were the diverse people she walked alongside with, fought for and had the great fortune to know. Through madness and fun, successes and the failures, always with open hands, an open mind and heart.
